We have discovered a spot on the back concrete wall which has been shot through! It is possible that a bullet could exit the range and fly toward an occupied area on another range. Several other spots on the concrete wall are also showing signs of damage and may be in danger of shoot-through. View some photos of the building exterior below.
It has taken 8 years of shooting activity for this problem to develop, and it's clear that no single shot has caused this damage. We are planning repairs to the concrete wall, and we are developing a plan to mitigate any further damage.
We are fortunate that the problem was discovered early before anyone was endangered. We are also fortunate that the range closing and the repairs can take place during the summer season when range usage is light and disruption to club programs will be minimal.
While the range is down, we are going to perform some regular range maintenance, including patching and "re-hanging" the red rubber range curtains. We are also considering a lead reclamation project if this activity can be scheduled with a commercial lead recovery firm.
When we built the range, we knew that lead reclamation would be an issue we would have to face 10-15 years down the road. With the range closed and lead (and copper!) prices way up, now might be the best time to pursue this project.
