Charlton Heston 1924-2008
Charlton Heston, who won the 1959 best actor Oscar as the chariot-racing "Ben-Hur" and portrayed Moses, Michelangelo, El Cid and other heroic figures in movie epics of the '50s and '60s, has died. He was 84. The actor died at his home in Beverly Hills.
In June 1998, Heston was elected president of the National Rifle Association. Heston stepped down as NRA president in April 2003, telling members his five years in office were "quite a ride. ... I loved every minute of it."
Later that year, Heston was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation's highest civilian honor.
On Sept. 22, 1999, Charlton Heston visited OSC to participate in the groundbreaking ceremony for the indoor shooting range.NRA LaPierre On Charlton Heston's Passing
In it's infinite wisdom, Congress has decided that
Daylight Savings Time
will begin several weeks early this year.
On March 9 remember to set your clocks and all your devices ahead 1 hour.
In what threatens to become a replay of the Y2K problem, all of your devices which would have automatically switched to DST at the formerly regular time will, if they have not yet been updated, advance in error an additional hour!
(The fun resumes next November 2 when DST ends one week later than normal.)
Shooting at steel targets presents inherent risks of ricochet and splashback.
Remember the plate range rules: No magnums. No bottle neck cartridges. 15 yard minimum distance. No cross firing. FULL eye protection (front, top, & sides).
Pistol shooters especially should be aware of recent rule changes for NRA sanctioned competitions requiring the use of "Empty Chamber Indicators" and the modified range commands associated with the devices. OSC bullseye shooters are now using the indicators on the firing line since we have acquired a supply of the devices. It's our intention to provide a safe shooting environment, and the use of Empty Chamber Indicators will be required. (This will also be good practice for when you do shoot in formal competitions.) Read more about the NRA pistol rule changes.
Note: The green empty chamber indicators supplied on the indoor range are made of plastic, not steel. If you bend them too much they will break! This first batch was acquired for use on the indoor range. All shooters should plan to acquire (purchase!) a few of these indicators since their use is required and they may not be provided for you at other clubs/ranges. Consider them as just a another shooting safety item, as basic as eye and ear protection.
Indoor range fees have been set by the Executive Committee as follows, effective January 6, 2008:
Individual use: $14.00/hr
Group use: $19.00/hr
This is only the second time user fees have increased since the range opened; it is due almost entirely to the rising price of electricity and propane. The access fees were last increased 4 years ago. The Guest user fee ($5) and Orientation fee ($20) remain unchanged.
Active Reloaders: I'm still accepting donations of components to demonstrate in the NRA Basic Metallic Cartridge Reloading course, both good examples of the different types of cases and bullets, and "bad examples" of problems and mistakes made during the reloading process. Contact Eric if you can help.
There's been some confusion in regards to downloading membership applications. I've received a rash of e-mail "error reports" recently pointing out that the links to the application form were broken. We provided this service a long time ago in a simpler age. But no more. Keeping an online application for membership up to date with the latest information concerning membership criteria, official rules, current dues, and the voucher program has proven to be too time consuming and only minimally beneficial to the club. To join, you must apply in person. And the best way to join the OSC is to become active in an OSC program. You'll need membership sponsors anyhow, so show up and get acquainted. Have your sponsor obtain the application for you, or come to a club meeting to apply in person.
Emergency parking lanes are marked at all ranges and facilities at the club. These are reserved for EMS use. Please respect these important designations.
NOTICE --- When you renew your NRA membership, keep the OSC informed of your new expiration date. We are a 100% NRA member club. NRA membership is a requirement for OSC membership, and it is absolutely vital that we maintain 100% status. Notify Jim Carras with your updated information.
The OLD barn REMAINS CLOSED TO ALL MEMBERS. The structure is unsafe; there's a likely chance the roof may collapse. The power is shut off.
The old barn's days may be numbered! Not content to wait for it to fall down on it's own, the Executive Committee is looking into a demolition and disposal plan this year.
Target frames on ALL of the ranges are for cardboard target backers. DO NOT SHOOT AT THEM BY PLACING TARGETS (cans, soda bottles, clay targets, etc.) ON THEM. WHY DO WE HAVE TO EXPLAIN THIS TO YOU?
PLEASE do not throw anything except empty aluminum cans into the aluminum can recycling bins! Paper items, plastic bottles, aerosol paint cans, brass cases, food, cigarette butts, chewing tobacco, and any other fluids of questionable or objectionable origin do not belong in the aluminum can bins. Other people have to transport, store, and handle these cans; our recycling efforts shouldn't create health concerns for everyone involved in the process.
Steel Pit Ranges #1 and #3 (the narrow lanes on either end) are open to all members. Steel Pit Range #2 (the wide lane in the middle with the shoot house) is always reserved and is not available for individual use. Range-specific rules are posted. No vehicles are to be driven closer to the pits than the storage shed.
INDOOR RANGE BULLET RESTRICTIONS:
Wadcutter bullets and any other bullet style with a cutting edge remain banned from use in the indoor range. There is a serious penalty for violations of this ban. The use of hollow-point bullets and polymer tip "explosive expansion" style bullets (such as .17 MACH 2 and .17 HMR) are, and will continue to be, prohibited.
New members: Still waiting for your membership card? All new members must attend a walk-through orientation of the club in order to obtain their cards. Contact an Executive Committee member to schedule your orientation or come to one of the regularly scheduled events to conduct the walk-through (if time permits).
All members and their guests must sign in (and pay guest fees) at the membership information center and sign-in kiosk before shooting and hunting. Failure to comply with this requirement is a serious infraction of your membership agreement and is subject to severe sanction. FOR YOUR PRIVACY AND SECURITY, MEMBERS NEED ONLY SIGN IN USING THEIR MEMBER NUMBER AND FIRST NAME.
Indoor range users: Remember to log out of the range properly when finished shooting AND sign the indoor range logbook. Failure to perform the first requirement risks a bill for 24 hours of range time ( currently $288.00); failure to perform the second requirement risks loss of range access! There are signs at each of the card readers to remind you that one card reader (the one outside the range) is used for range access, and the second card reader (the one inside the range) is used for range egress.
In order to help shorten and streamline business during general membership meetings, the Executive Committee requires that all activity proposals be directed to the appropriate program committee prior to the Executive Committee meeting.
Please continue to use our official post office box address when sending correspondence to the club (P.O. Box 83, State College, PA 16804).
Our listed address (142 Sportsman Lane, Bellefonte, PA 16623), posted near clubhouse telephones, is intended for emergencies when calling Centre County 911.
